Understory Forecast ("Understory") is operated by Maya Mushroom LLC, Buckhannon, West Virginia, USA. This policy explains what information the app uses and why.

Your foraging log stays on your device

Log entries, notes, photos, and saved coordinates are stored only in your browser's local storage on the device you use. They are not uploaded to our servers. Clearing your browser data, or using "Clear all data on this device" in Settings, deletes them permanently. You can export them at any time.

Photos you add are resized on your device and their embedded location (GPS EXIF) data is removed before they are saved.

Location and search

To show a forecast, the app uses the location you choose (by search, map tap, or your device's location if you allow it). Your chosen location is remembered on your device. It is sent to these services only to perform the request:

• Open-Meteo receives coordinates rounded to a 0.1-degree area to return weather data. If our weather connection is unavailable, your browser requests the same data directly; Open-Meteo then also receives your IP address. Your saved finds and photos are never sent.
• Place names are searched on your device. Your browser downloads a small list of places starting with the first letters you typed, so our server sees only those letters, not your search.
• OpenStreetMap Nominatim receives postal codes, and place names our own list doesn't have. Those searches go through our server, so your IP address is not shared with them.
• CARTO serves map images for the area you view.
• Wikimedia serves species reference photos.

Contact form

If you send us a message through the contact form, we store your email address, optional name, and message so we can reply. We keep these messages only as long as needed to respond and then delete them.

What we do not do

• No advertising, ad trackers, or third-party analytics cookies.
• We do not sell or share personal information.
• No user accounts are required to use the app.

Hosting and logs

Our hosting provider may keep short-lived technical logs (such as IP address, browser type, and time of request) for security and to keep the service running. Fonts are served from our own site.

Children

Understory is intended for adults 18 and older and is not directed at children under 13.

Your choices and rights

Because your log lives on your device, you control it directly: export or delete it in Settings. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK, or California), you may have rights to access or delete information we hold about you, such as contact form messages. To make a request, contact us.

We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date above.
